As the new year begins, it is a time for reflection, gratitude and setting intentions for the months ahead. For foster parents, this season can carry an even deeper meaning. Providing stability and hope for children in foster care is life-changing but also comes with its challenges. Please remember that no matter where you are in your journey, you have accomplished a lot, and it does not go unnoticed.

Reflecting on the Past Year

Looking back, this year was likely one full of triumphs and trials. Perhaps you welcomed a new child into your home, celebrated their birthdays or milestones, or had the privilege to see them be reunified with their family. Each moment was special because of your resilience and capacity to care for them. Take a moment to celebrate the growth and accomplishments you have experienced—not only in the children you have supported but also within yourself.

Resolutions for the New Year

As we step into the new year, determine your goals that will strengthen us as foster parents and enrich the children you serve. Here are a few resolutions to consider:

1. Prioritize Self-Care

  • You can’t pour from an empty cup. Take time and moments for yourself, whether that is doing a hobby you love, meditating or enjoying a quiet cup of coffee. Focusing on well-being is essential for sustaining the energy and compassion you need when fostering.

2. Enhance Communication Skills

  • Make it a goal to improve your conversations with not only your kids but with case workers, birth families and anyone else involved in their life. Active listening and open dialogue can make a world of difference in building trust and forming lasting connections.

3. Focus on Education & Training

  • Stay informed about trauma-informed care, cultural competency and other areas that enhance your role as a foster parent. Research and attend workshops, join online communities or talk to your case worker.

4. Strengthen Family Connections

  • Work on creating meaningful relationships between your foster children and their birth families when appropriate. Talk to your case worker to gain more insight.

5. Strive for Adaptability

  • There are often unexpected changes when it comes to fostering. Be open to change and embrace flexibility when approaching challenges. Strive to be adaptable to unforeseen situations.

Whether you start these intentions today, next week or months from now, your efforts matter. Every small act of kindness helps create a brighter future for the children you welcome into your life.

We wish you a happy new year filled with hope, growth and unforgettable moments!
